Bernie Rhinerson, Chairman of the San Diego County Water Authority and the US Desalination Coalition and Bob Yamada, Desalination Program Manager at SDCWA were invited to participate in a trade mission by the US Embassy of the Spanish Government. They traveled with a group of 75 business people from a variety of industry sectors to Spain from October 23 to Oct. 30. The goal of the mission was to educate US businesses about the resources available for foreign trade with Spain.
Rhinerson and Yamada toured three major desalination facilities on the south coast of Spain at Carboneras, Almiria, and Malaga. The Carboneras facility is one of the largest in the world producing 33 mgd for agricultural use in the area. Educational meetings and tours were provided by representatives of Spanish companies involved in the desalination industry including, Befesa, Abengoa, Pridesa and Calagua. They also met with representatives of the Spanish Desalination Association and representatives from the Misinstry planning future water supplies for Spain.
